Keeping a close eye on the E. coli outbreak in Europe

July 4, 2011

MAF continues to closely monitor the European outbreaks of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in France and Germany. Investigations by the French and German authorities now strongly suggest that locally produced bean sprouts were the source of the deadly E. coli O104:H4 outbreaks.

New Zealand does not import seeds for sprouting or bean sprouts from France, Germany or Egypt.

MAF continues to review reports from our overseas counterparts on any developments related to the European E. coli outbreaks, and will take further precautions if necessary.
