This technical directive has been issued due to the sunset clause on
technical directive 98/172 Surveillance of Water, issued 23 September 1998. |

Meat Circular 95/RAM/11, Surveillance of Potable Water issued on the 28th
August 1995 cancelled Technical Directive 95/99, Surveillance of Water, issued on the 27th
June 1995. |

Specifications in Technical Directive 95/99 relating to physico-chemical
testing of water were cancelled in conjunction with those pertaining to microbiological
testing. The specifications in Technical Directive 95/99 relating to physico-chemical
testing are still current. |

Aim |

To advise requirements for the testing of odour, taste and temperature in
potable water. |

Physico-chemical Tests |
| 3.1.1 |
The taste and odour of water should not be objectionable to the consumer
(WHO 1993 "Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality", Second Edition, Volume 1,
Recommendations). Assessment of these characteristics of water is expected to be
performed daily by personnel on the plant who consume water. Changes in these
characteristics are to be investigated to determine the cause. |

The temperature of cold water at point of use should not exceed 25
degrees Celsius. Some assessment of this should be made as an ongoing assessment of water
quality, but clearly this is inappropriate for an off site laboratory to perform. |

The criteria for Category A routine monitoring (Circular 86/3/5,
86/14/15) relating to the testing of odour, taste and temperature is now removed from the
list given in Appendix B Table 1. |

Water, issued 23 September 1998. |
