Exporting organic products to the European Union (EU)

This page provides a summary of the market access requirements when exporting organic products to the European Union (EU).

Official Organic Assurance Progamme (OOAP)

The EU recognises New Zealand's Official Organic Assurance Programme (OOAP) as equivalent to their own organic regulations.

New Zealand is listed as a ‘third country’ with equivalence with the EU for some organic products, but not all types of organic products are covered under the OOAP. For example, aquaculture products are excluded.

Equivalence with the European Commission is recognised in Annex III of the Commission Regulation (EC) No.1235/2008.

Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMARs)

Details of market access requirements for organic products exported to the EU are provided in this PDF document

EU Organic OMAR (28 KB PDF)

Remember that organic exporters also need to meet the standard (non-organic) OMARs for the EU. Access these by clicking exporting in the Related information menu on the right and selecting OMARs.

Exporters must have an export certificate (official assurance) from MPI Food Safety for each consignment of organic product you export to the EU. Apply for an export certificate by completing this application form.
