Exporting organic products to the United States of America (USA)
This page provides a summary of the market access requirements when exporting organic products to the United States of America (USA).
Official Organic Assurance Progamme (OOAP)
If you export organic products to the United States under the Official Organic Assurance Programme (OOAP), they must be produced in accordance with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP).
The USDA recognises MPI Food Safety as an accrediting body for their NOP. MPI Food Safety accredits Third Party Agencies (TPAs) to manage compliance to the NOP. Products that comply with the USDA NOP may display the USDA organic seal. You can apply for the USDA organic seal in New Zealand, under the oversight of your TPA.
You must notify MPI Food Safety of all consignments of organic product that you export to the USA under the OOAP. Although an export certificate is not required to be issued by MPI Food Safety, you must register your consignment by completing this application form.
Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMARs)
Details of the Overseas Market Access Requirement (OMAR) for organic products exported to the USA are provided in this OMAR link.
Remember that organic exporters also need to meet the standard (non-organic) OMARs for the USA. Access these by clicking Exporting in the Related information menu on the right and selecting OMARs.
Check with your Third Party Agency (TPA) whether you need an organic certificate issued by them to accompany your consignment of organic product to the USA.
